What causes sftp error 10058 and how can it be resolved?

Our Support Engineers have a decade of experience in server management and are familiar with these SFTP errors.

Let's now discuss the root causes of this error and the possible solutions.

  1. Failure to authenticate: Incorrect username/password

A common cause of Sftp error 10058 is an authentication failure. We remedied the failed authentication by resetting and reusing the exact password or user name.

The majority of customers seek support for the 10058 sftp error caused by an invalid password or user name.

When transferring the file via sftp, one customer encountered the same issue. Reviewing the ssh logs revealed that the error was caused by a failed authentication.

For CentOS and RHEL servers, the logs are examined at

/var/log/secure

Since the client's server was Ubuntu, we examined the logs at:

/var/log/auth.log

In this instance, the client utilized password-based authentication. Therefore, we requested that the user verify the key. The issue was fixed after the password was reset.

  1. Incorrect FTP settings

The error will also lead to incorrect FTP configuration/settings.

Another customer recently approached us with a similar error. On further investigation, we determined that the issue was caused by incorrect FileZilla settings (FTP client). We assisted the client in ensuring that his FTP client's settings were accurate.

  1. Launch the FTP client's settings tab.

  2. Then select the authentication tab.

  3. After that, uncheck the auto-login option.

  4. Finally, Verify password authentication.

However, because he was using an older version of FileZilla, the customer was unable to locate these settings options. We advised the customer to upgrade to the most recent version of FileZilla. Following the upgrade, we adjusted the settings.

The user's final attempt to transfer the file via SFTP was successful.
